Mechanic Full-Time in the Service Department

Position: Mechanic I

Class Summary:
Under periodic supervision of Mechanic II or Mechanic Working Foreman, performs assigned tasks of minor overhaul, repair, modification and testing of engines and equipment requiring skilled knowledge of service equipment and procedures.

Essential Duties:
Periodic inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications; tuning of gasoline and diesel engines; cleaning and repair of carburetors; adjusting valves; and clean, adjust, or replace diesel injector nozzles; and tire replacement. Proper housekeeping of work areas and adherence to all safety practices are mandated.

Replace and repair major operating parts of passenger cars, trucks, heavy equipment and service equipment including exhaust systems, brake lines, generators and alternators, water pumps, conventional transmissions, clutches, electrical systems, ect. May inspect and service batteries, repair tires and adjust brakes. Must keep accurate maintenance records by documenting individual repair of maintenance tasks performed on vehicles and equipment, service and repair vehicles and equipment which are inoperative in the field, and may also be assigned to other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge Requirements:
Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s Licenses and CDL (Commercial Driver’s Licenses), knowledge of safety practices, knowledge of and the ability to interpret technical manuals, knowledge of mechanics and procedures, also the ability to count, read and understand warning signs, and the ability to keep proper documentation. Familiarity with computers will be considered a desirable characteristic.

Skills Required:
Skills in use of power tools, hand tools (must have own hand tools) and specific equipment, must have communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, the general public, ect., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work directions.

Physical Activities/Requirements:
Lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:
Exerting over 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Exposed to extremes of weather elements and may work occasional weekends and/or overtime.

Probationary period:
90 days per AFSCME Union Contract.

Attention Eastlake Residents: Unidirectional Flushing Notice

The Lake County Department of Utilities will be conducting unidirectional fire hydrant flushing in the cities of Willoughby, Eastlake, Wickliffe and Willowick. The areas to be flushed are the shaded area on the attached map along with Euclid Ave from Grove West to the Willowick/Willoughby border and Vine Street starting at Erie St. West to Lakeshore Blvd (highlighted in red). Flushing will begin on 4/3/18 and continue through the 5/24/18. Signs will be posted in the areas that are to be flushed. Please refer to our website in the public announcement section for areas to be flushed and schedule updates.

Residents are warned not to do laundry on days that hydrants are to be flushed. Discolored water may occur, and can be flushed from the cold-water tap.
