CHAGRIN RIVER WATERSHED PARTNERS INVITES INPUT REGARDING

WATER POLLUTION, EROSION AND FLOODING CHALLENGES IN

LOWER CHAGRIN RIVER SUBWATERSHED

Willoughby, Ohio (August 8, 2018) — Chagrin River Watershed Partners invites public input as they work to update the Chagrin River Watershed Action Plan for the Town of Willoughby – Chagrin River subwatershed. A watershed plan is a comprehensive plan for achieving water resource goals for a geographically defined watershed.  This subwatershed has an area of about 18 square miles and includes portions of the Cities of Eastlake, Willoughby, and Mentor. The updated plan will identify critical areas and needs for natural resource protection and restoration in areas that drain to the Chagrin River and its tributaries in this subwatershed. Major tributaries include Corporation Creek and Ward/Newell Creek. Anyone may provide input by contacting Chagrin River Watershed Partners, responding to an online survey or attending a public planning meeting on August 21st. Please call or email the Watershed Partners at (440) 975-3870, extension 1006 and This email address is being protected from spambots. The Chagrin River watershed drains 267 square miles in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Portage counties and includes all or portions of twenty-two municipalities, ten townships, and four park districts. The Main Branch of the Chagrin River begins north of Bass Lake in the City of Chardon and flows 48 miles before entering Lake Erie in the City of Eastlake. Along its path, the Main Branch is joined by the Aurora Branch in the Village of Bentleyville and the East Branch in the City of Willoughby. Seventy-one miles of the Chagrin River have been designated as a State Scenic River because of exceptional aquatic habitat and adjacent high quality forests. The Chagrin River watershed contains seven subwatersheds, each of which must have approved watershed plans to be eligible for some sources of federal funding for projects to address erosion and water quality concerns.

Chagrin River Watershed Partners is a regional partnership that enhances quality of life by preserving rivers, planning for better development and solving natural resource management problems.  Communities, counties and park districts formed the Watershed Partners in 1996 to address rising infrastructure costs because of flooding, erosion and water pollution.

More information about the Chagrin River Watershed Action Plan is available on CRWP’s website under the Project tab here: http://crwp.org/index.php/projects/watershed-plans.
