Morris Clifton of Euclid remembers that he was in his bedroom watching TV on Sept. 11, 2001, when a bulletin broke in about a commercial airliner striking one of the World Trade Center towers.
As he stayed riveted to his television and watched the 9/11 terrorist attacks unfold, Clifton said he felt a sense of disbelief.
"I couldn't grasp the reality of it, that it was real as I looked at it on my TV," said Clifton, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972.
As he looks back over the past 10 years, Clifton said one way that 9/11 strengthened our country was by creating a renewed spirit of togetherness and thoughtfulness among Americans.

U.S. Army veteran Joe Strand says he visits the Boulevard of 500 Flags in Eastlake whenever he needs his spirits lifted.
"It's one of the most solemn places I go," said Strand, chairman of the East
lake Memorial Committee. "I've been to Normandy Cemetery, I've been to Arlington Cemetery, the one in Rittman... when I feel sad or down, I go and sit there because it's really uplifting. It's a feeling that goes through me that I cannot express. It's something you have to feel on your own when you go down there and hear the flags flapping and the lanyards banging. It sounds like someone singing. It's a beautiful thing."

Don Mervogel, chaplain of VFW Post 3863, led the group in prayer.
"Because of their dedication to duty, we still enjoy the freedom we inherited from our forefathers because they served well," he said. "We are proud to call them our own."

A corner of Eastlake has not only been revamped, but its anchor store has opened earlier than anticipated.
With a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 19, Walgreens reopened its doors Friday after moving from its former location at 33693 Vine St. into the new 14,820-square-foot building at 35279 Vine St.
"It's been wonderful," store manager Chris Lockwood said. "You wouldn't believe the customers that are in the store. It's been a very, very, very busy morning."
The store had tentatively been planning to open early next year, however, the transition to the new location took only 18 days and went smoothly, Lockwood said, adding they'll still have a grand reopening circular most likely in January.

Eastlake Retail Plaza Project on Schedule From the News-Herald
By Cassandra Shofar
The retail plaza being built at the intersection of state Route 91 and Vine Street in Eastlake is coming closer to fruition every week.
"The building is taking shape. We told everybody it's going to be a beautiful building and I think people are starting to realize it. Each week, it changes up dramatically," said Neil Weinberger, president of Chagrin Falls-based JND Properties, the developer for the project.
The plaza eventually will be the new home for Walgreens — currently at 22693 Vine St., about one mile west near East 337th Street — which will move into the new 4,820-square-foot building and serve as the anchor tenant.
Walgreens' tentative plan is to open sometime in February, said a spokeswoman at the store.
