Longtime patrons at Biagio's will feel right at home in new location
News-Herald, January 7, 2010 by Brandon C. Baker

Joe Cappadonna and family are relieved it's finally over.

The family that runs Biagio's Donut Shop & Pizzeria in Eastlake spent months preparing for their relocation by developing design plans and enlisting movers who brought a tow motor to transport everything from the shop's steel fryers and washers to the hundreds of pounds of flour they use every day.

Now, owner Joe, his father, Biagio, and the others are back to business as usual while settling in after the big move — it covered a whopping 100 feet.

"Yes, we only moved 100 feet across the parking lot, but we needed the parking space," said Joe, who operates the shop with the help of his mother, Mary, and sister, Laura Freiberg. "Our business has probably tripled since then."

Eastlake opens new ice rink
News-Herald, December 28, 2009 by Cassandra Shofar

For Eastlake residents, winter doesn't necessarily equal indoors — at least for those who like to ice skate or sled ride.

The city recently built an outdoor ice rink in front of Classic Park at 35300 Vine St., hoping to entice parents and kids to do more outdoor activities during the winter season, Mayor Ted Andrzejewski said.

"I remember when I was a teenager and the city did something like this. They'd take an area in the city, flood it and make an ice rink," Andrzejewski said.

"We wanted to give more activities in the wintertime for our people to do. And right here at Classic Park was the perfect place to do it. It's under the lights, so people can skate at night, (and) where we have it, it's right by the parking lot."

Tree lighting brightens spirits on cool, damp evening in Eastlake
News-Herald, November 30, 2009 by Tracey Read

Willowick resident Mark Cronin was a little surprised when his fiance told him where she wanted him to take her Sunday for their date night.

The Eastlake Tree Lighting Ceremony? Seriously?

"I just wanted to see the lights," his fiance, Eastlake resident Chelsae Hipp, said with a shrug as she and Cronin huddled together under a large umbrella.

The pouring rain did not stop an estimated 200 people from attending the annual ceremony, which took place at the fire station at Route 91 and Lake Shore Boulevard.

Fire department feeling pinch
News-Herald, November 27, 2009 by Nick Carrabine

Eastlake Fire Chief Ted Whittington said he can't thank the citizens of Eastlake enough for recently approving the city's 0.5-mill renewal fire levy.

The fire department plans to use the money to replace a rescue squad, a 24-year-old fire engine and a 20-year-old police and fire investigation vehicle. The levy also will pay for repairs to the 51-year-old fire station, add to the traffic light pre-emption system and replace firefighting gear.

On Monday, the department received a new ambulance.

"We are very lucky," Whittington said. "We've been very fortunate that our community supports us. This really lets us be proactive with purchasing equipment."

Stainless Specialties, Inc. moving into Eastlake
Lake County Tribune, October 23, 2009 by Bud Martello

EASTLAKE – Stainless Specialties, Inc., a supplier of restaurant equipment, is soon to move into the city of Eastlake from Cleveland. This company was enticed to move to the city by a tax incentive grant which was passed by city council at their regular meeting on Oct. 13. Payroll is expected to be near a million.

“They are doing quite well,” Mayor Ted Andrzejewski said, “and we are glad to have them.”

Under the typical terms of a development department incentive, the city will, at the end of the year, rebate back to the business concern a percentage of the income taxes paid by the employees. In the case of Eastlake, which has a 2 percent income tax, this amount can range anywhere from one quarter to three quarters of the payroll tax.

The city is working to attract more businesses.

Congratulations to EastSide Boulevard at the Radisson!

EastSide was the 1st Place Winner in the Mayor’s Dessert Cup Challenge at the Taste of Cleveland on Saturday, September 5.

The signature dessert Mademoiselle de la Maison by Executive Chef Shannon Russell Rivera brought home the golden trophy. Sixteen cities participated, and the judges were well-known in the food industry. Eastlake Mayor Ted Andrzejewski proudly holds the trophy, left.

Eastlake looks to retire $10 million of stadium debt
News-Herald, July 14, 2009

Five years of planning is on the verge of becoming reality in Eastlake.

At tonight's meeting, City Council will consider an ordinance that would authorize the city to pay off more than $10 million in stadium debt associated with Classic Park . . .

. . . "This is a substantial amount of debt we're getting rid of," Mayor Ted Andrzejewski said. "It's a great feeling to know what we planned out has worked and will come to fruition."

If the ordinance is approved, the city would pay down all of its 2002 taxable bond — about $8.09 million — completely eliminating it from the city's books. Also, the city would pay down about $2.62 million on its 2004 tax-exempt bond.
